As the summer fades away, I can’t help but reflect on what an amazing few months we had. It started with the latest transformation of the band’s lineup as Anne and I began performing as a duo. We played a series of shows in late May and early June to test the waters of this new configuration and experiment with a more stripped down version of the dreampop sound that we had been evolving toward since the beginning of the year. The shows started at the Abbey Bar at Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg, PA, followed by a spectacular house show at The Cellar, and an wonderful evening opening for Lillie Lemon at The Rabbit and Dragonfly in Lancaster, PA.
We loved the direction we were headed in so we spent the heart of the summer in our rehearsal studio further refining what it meant to create and perform with the constraints of less people and more dependency on machines. A spark ignited during those mid-summer sessions and a floodgate of creative energy opened up to us. We wrote a half dozen brand new songs and spent the evenings falling deeper in love with the atmospheric sounds we were creating. We shared some of these new sounds at The Candy Factory’s Warehouse D at a show with the Emily Rodgers Band (Pittsburgh, PA). It was one of those rare and brief periods of pure creativity that only come around every so often. We were lucky to be able to swim in it for a while. – JM
